The Baiadas Celebrated for Lifting Up Camden's Youth—and Others

For the children of Camden, it can be overwhelming to confront the challenges that no child should face daily: gang and drug recruitment, substance abuse in the home, teen pregnancy, and a struggling public school system. They are growing up in the nation’s poorest and most dangerous city, and they need help.

The LUCY Project

The Jesuit ideal of “living as men and women with and for others” resonates deeply with Kristin Prinn, MSW, LCSW, a 2004 graduate of Saint Joseph’s University. Prinn’s mindset is borne of sacrifice, compassion, and the importance of giving back and looking out for
others, which are all Ignatian lessons her mother taught her as a youth. What’s more, these teachings were compounded by the time she reached SJU. She hit the ground  running once she arrived on Hawk Hill as an undergrad, working with the Faith-Justice Institute and taking service-learning classes each semester.

Luis Martinez knows the impact that alumni support can have. A native of Camden, N.J., Martinez was an academically gifted high school student, accepted to all ten of the colleges he applied to, and eager to attend Saint Joseph’s University. Yet, he was not receiving the assistance he needed with the financial aid process and the transition to college– until he was introduced to the Ignatian College Connection program by an SJU alumna.
